According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA),
fire departments across the nation responded to 3,570 fires at
residence halls, Greek housing and barracks between 2003 and 2006.
Whether you live in a residence hall, a Greek house or off-campus in
an apartment or shared house, practicing fire safety will help you
reduce the chance of experiencing a fire at home. Having a
plan for what to do if you do experience a fire will improve your
chances of escaping fire.

Here are a few steps that will make your home safer:
- Make sure you have working smoke alarms before you move into your
apartment or house. If you rent, the landlord is responsible for
providing a working smoke alarm.
- Test your smoke alarms monthly by pushing the "test" button.
- When cooking or heating up food, use a timer and stay nearby.
Most fires start from food left unattended on the stove.
- Don't overload outlets. Use power strips with internal circuit
breakers that will trip the breaker to prevent overheating and fire.
- Avoid smoking when drinking alcohol or when feeling sleepy.
Impaired judgment from alcohol is a factor in 50% of fire deaths on
college campuses.
- Know two ways out of your residence. If you discover fire,
close doors behind you as you leave to prevent fire and smoke from
spreading.
- Never re-enter a building or house on fire.
