Subject: Revision of Luminous Egress Path Marking in Existing
High Rise Buildings
On November 18, 2011 the State Building Code Council took an emergency
action to revise the Washington State amendments to the 2009 International
Fire Code. This action effectively repealed the requirements pertaining to
retrofitting floor identification signs and photo luminescent or
self-luminous exit path markings in exit enclosures in existing high-rise
buildings. The effective date of this action was December 2, 2012.

The 2009 Seattle Fire Code became effective October 30, 2010.
The current fire code is comprised of the 2009 International Fire
Code (IFC), published by the International Code Council (ICC), with
Seattle Amendments as adopted in
City of Seattle Ordinance
123393.
Also effective on this date are the:
- 2009 Seattle Building Code
- 2009 Seattle Municipal Code
- 2009 Seattle Residential Code
- 2009 Seattle Fuel Gas Code

For hard copies of the Seattle codes, contact DPD's Public Resource Center.
The 2009 Seattle Fire Code may also be purchased over the counter at the
Seattle Fire Marshal’s Office, 220 3rd Avenue South, Floor
2, weekdays from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. The price is $73.00. Seattle
code books may also be purchased on line from the
International Code Council (ICC) though the cost is higher.
